Cape Town’s cruise industry is set for a strong season in 2025, with 24 ship calls expected at the Cape Town Cruise Terminal in March alone, according to Cruise Cape Town, operated by Wesgro.
For the 2024/25 season, a total of 76 ship calls are scheduled—an increase from 67 last season—with the season running until June 2025.
Economic Impact and Growth
- During the 2023/24 season, cruise tourism contributed R1.32 billion to the regional economy, up from R1.2 billion in the previous year.
- The total expenditure from vessels and passengers reached R1.5 billion, surpassing the R1.4 billion recorded the year before.
March remains a key month for cruise tourism due to Cape Town’s favorable late-summer weather, making it a top international cruise destination.
City Prepares for Increased Passenger Arrivals
With more ships in port, Cape Town is preparing for higher passenger volumes and increased activity around the terminal.
James Vos, Mayoral Committee Member for Economic Growth, highlighted the positive economic impact of cruise tourism:
“Cape Town offers an exceptional experience for cruise passengers, and the March arrivals will not only create a buzz in the city but provide a major boost to our economy. For every 36 cruise passengers arriving, one job is created.”
To accommodate the surge in arrivals, the City of Cape Town, in partnership with the V&A Waterfront, has implemented:
- Designated transport options for cruise passengers.
- Enhanced security measures at the terminal.
- Increased traffic marshals on high-volume days to improve flow and logistics.
With continued growth in cruise tourism, Cape Town is solidifying its reputation as a leading global cruise destination.
