South African shippers and logistics stakeholders are being urged to prepare for widespread disruption across the country’s freight and cargo movement networks, as the United National Transport Union (Untu) signals the start of protected strike action against Transnet.
Heneways, a leading freight forwarding and logistics company, issued a logistics advisory to its clients, warning that the impending labour action could have a major impact on national freight movement and logistics operations.
“This industrial action may directly affect cargo flow through Transnet’s rail and port systems,” the advisory stated.
Potential Disruptions at a Glance
Heneways highlighted several areas of concern:
-
Delays in freight rail and port operations
-
Congestion at terminals nationwide
-
Longer lead times for imports and exports
-
Disruption to container collection and delivery schedules
The union action follows unresolved wage negotiations and continued concerns over working conditions and infrastructure shortcomings at Transnet — South Africa’s state-owned freight and logistics company that plays a vital role in the movement of goods.
“Untu has formally notified its intention to begin protected industrial action,” Heneways said.
“Although the exact strike dates have not yet been confirmed, preparations are underway for a nationwide impact.”
Critical Infrastructure at Risk
Transnet is the backbone of South Africa’s logistics network, managing the bulk of rail freight, major seaports, and pipelines. Disruptions to its operations can ripple across the economy, affecting manufacturers, exporters, importers, and retailers.
Heneways emphasized the importance of contingency planning and proactive communication.
“We are working closely with our logistics partners, port operators, and terminals to reduce the effect of this strike where possible. However, delays and congestion are likely.”
What Shippers Should Do
In anticipation of the strike, Heneways is advising clients to:
-
Review and adjust supply chain timelines
-
Plan for potential delays in delivery and dispatch
-
Communicate any urgent or time-sensitive cargo requirements
Shippers with critical shipments or tight deadlines should remain in close contact with their logistics providers to explore alternative routes or scheduling options, should disruptions escalate.
