Ethiopia is making significant strides toward securing access to the sea by deepening diplomatic ties with Somalia, according to Nebiat Getachew, spokesperson for Ethiopia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Speaking to APA News, Getachew emphasized that Ethiopia’s economic future depends on reliable maritime access, making recent diplomatic engagements with Somalia a critical step forward.
Strengthening Diplomatic Bonds
Ethiopian and Somali leaders have reaffirmed their shared commitment to sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity while actively exploring avenues for Ethiopia to gain coastal access. This marks a renewed era of collaboration, focusing on mutual interests and regional stability.
A key milestone in this process was Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s visit to Somalia, which reinforced cross-border cooperation and laid the groundwork for strategic projects designed to benefit both nations.
Regional Stability and Economic Collaboration
Beyond trade and infrastructure, Ethiopia has also pledged its continued participation in the African Union Support and Stabilisation Mission in Somalia, underscoring its role in promoting peace and security in the region.
Meanwhile, in December, Ethiopian and Somali leaders met in Turkey to initiate technical discussions on a formal agreement. These talks aim to balance Ethiopia’s maritime ambitions with Somalia’s territorial integrity, ensuring a mutually beneficial solution.
As diplomatic efforts intensify, Ethiopia’s push for sea access could reshape regional trade dynamics, strengthening both nations’ economic prospects while fostering deeper cooperation across East Africa.
