Vienna International Airport recorded its highest-ever air cargo volumes in 2025, driven by expanded long-haul connectivity, strong pharmaceutical traffic and continued growth in e-commerce shipments.
Total cargo throughput reached 313,763 tonnes, representing a 5.3% year-on-year increase, according to the airport. The performance was supported by the targeted expansion of long-haul services, which added belly-hold capacity, alongside rising demand for time- and temperature-sensitive cargo.
The airport’s Vienna Pharma Handling Center also posted a new record, with volumes increasing 6.4% compared with the previous year, underlining Vienna’s growing role in pharmaceutical logistics.
Imports and Exports Show Solid Growth
Import volumes rose 2.8% year on year to 167,568 tonnes, with cargo distributed primarily to recipients across Central and Eastern Europe.
Exports showed even stronger momentum, particularly during the first half of the year, partly influenced by changes in US customs policy. Export volumes reached 146,195 tonnes, exceeding the previous year’s total by 8.4%, with Asia and the United States among the key destination markets.
Strengthening Vienna’s Role as a Regional Cargo Hub
Julian Jäger, joint chief executive and chief operating officer of Vienna Airport, said air cargo remains a critical pillar of global trade.
“Airfreight secures global supply chains and promotes economic growth. Vienna Airport plays a central role as a logistics hub and as the most important gateway for air cargo to Central and Eastern Europe,” he said, adding that the airport is well positioned due to its global airline network, specialised services and experienced workforce.
Michael Zach, senior vice president of handling and cargo, noted that Vienna has traditionally been a major transhipment hub for cargo from Asia and is now benefiting from growing volumes to North America.
“Looking ahead to 2026, our goal is to build on this positive development together with our customers and partners,” he said.
