Atlas Copco Introduces Energy-Efficient Dry Screw Vacuum Pump for Industrial Conveying Applications

As African industries continue investing in automation, energy efficiency and sustainable manufacturing, demand is growing for vacuum technologies that deliver high performance while reducing operating costs and maintenance requirements. From food processing and paper production to packaging, mining and manufacturing, efficient vacuum systems are becoming essential for improving productivity and process reliability.

To meet these evolving industrial needs, Atlas Copco has developed the DHS 3000 VSD+, a dry screw vacuum pump engineered specifically for high-flow industrial conveying applications.

Designed for demanding environments, the oil-free vacuum pump is suitable for paper processing, pneumatic conveying systems, pick-and-place operations in the food industry and central vacuum installations, making it a versatile solution for a wide range of manufacturing sectors.

At the heart of the DHS 3000 VSD+ is a highly efficient IE4 electric motor combined with a patented asymmetrical rotor design. According to Atlas Copco, this advanced configuration can deliver energy savings of up to 50% compared with conventional vacuum pump technologies, helping industries reduce electricity consumption while lowering overall operating costs.

The compact unit has also been designed to operate with low noise and minimal vibration, improving workplace conditions while supporting reliable, continuous industrial operations.

One of the key features of the DHS 3000 VSD+ is its intelligent variable speed drive (VSD) control system. Integrated with a frequency converter, the system continuously adjusts pump speed to match real-time process demand, ensuring that only the required vacuum level is produced at any given time.

This intelligent operation significantly reduces energy consumption while minimising wear on moving components. Lower mechanical stress contributes to extended maintenance intervals, improved equipment reliability and a longer operational lifespan, making the pump particularly attractive for industries focused on reducing total cost of ownership.

The dry-running technology also eliminates the risk of oil contamination within the vacuum process. A wear-resistant gearbox provides efficient power transmission between the motor and screw assembly, while a cooled oil circulation system protects the gearbox itself and enhances gear durability.

According to Carol Pignatelli, Product Manager at Atlas Copco, the cooled oil flow extends the service life of the gearbox without introducing oil into the vacuum process, thereby eliminating the risk of oil carryover and contamination.

To further improve operational reliability, the DHS 3000 VSD+ is equipped with an air intake filter that protects internal components from dust and airborne particles commonly encountered in industrial environments. This combination of oil-free operation, robust engineering and simplified mechanical design helps reduce maintenance requirements while ensuring consistent process performance.

For African industries seeking to improve energy efficiency, minimise downtime and enhance production reliability, technologies such as the DHS 3000 VSD+ offer practical solutions that align with modern industrial sustainability goals. As manufacturers continue adopting smarter and more efficient production systems, advanced vacuum technologies will play an increasingly important role in supporting productivity, operational resilience and long-term cost savings across the continent.
