Container terminal considered for South Africa’s Richards Bay port

The South African state owned port company Transnet has issued a request for information for the design, building and financing of a container terminal for the Richards Bay port in the province of KwaZulu-Natal.

Containers are currently being handled at the multipurpose terminal, which has limited capacity. The request for information is to test the market, after Transnet has in the past received unsolicited proposals from private companies to develop a container terminal.

There are however, a few challenges to overcome experts in the industry say. This includes the need for a functioning rail system away from the current over reliance on trucks.
