Liebherr Launches LiSIM ROS: A Next-Generation Simulator for Remote Crane Operations

Liebherr Container Cranes Ltd has unveiled the LiSIM ROS, a highly advanced crane simulator engineered specifically for Remote Operator Station (ROS) ship-to-shore (STS) container cranes. Built using genuine Liebherr controls, hardware, and PLCs, the system delivers true-to-life responsiveness, ensuring that every movement, load reaction, and operational function mirrors the performance of a real crane.

Developed by the same engineering team behind Liebherr’s STS cranes, the LiSIM ROS recreates critical dynamics such as load sway, inertia, and response time with remarkable precision. This realism allows trainees to transition seamlessly to live crane operations, already equipped with the muscle memory and technical familiarity required for safe, confident performance.

The simulator covers the full workflow of container handling—from crane start-up and shutdown to operations on deck, inside vessel holds, and during hatch cover handling. Multiple vessel types and terminal environments are included, enabling operators to train across a wide variety of real-world scenarios.

A Complete Training Ecosystem

LiSIM ROS is not only a tool for new operator training but also a long-term workforce development platform. Terminals can use it to recruit, assess, and upskill potential operators while minimizing safety risks. Experienced operators can refine techniques, practice complex manoeuvres, and complete structured refresher courses without interrupting port operations.

Because training is conducted without using live equipment, terminals benefit from lower emissions, zero wear on cranes, and uninterrupted operational availability. The simulator’s low running costs and ability to train at any time deliver both immediate and long-term financial gains—significantly reducing training costs per operator compared with traditional on-crane methods.

Instructor-Led Training With Measurable Performance

The instructor station features dual monitors, a 3D controller, and a 360° drone-style camera view, allowing supervisors to observe and analyse every movement in real time. Training scenarios can be customised, and difficulty levels can be adjusted instantly to match each trainee’s skill level.

LiSIM’s Driver Analysis system records, measures, and quantifies every action, offering clear performance data for both instructors and trainees. This evidence-based approach ensures targeted skills development, accurate evaluation, and a reliable indication of operator readiness.

A New Standard in Terminal Training

Now available globally, the LiSIM ROS establishes a new benchmark for crane operator training. Combining authentic Liebherr technology, ultra-realistic simulation, and continuous skills development, it equips terminals with a safe, efficient, and cost-effective solution for building and maintaining a high-performance operator workforce.

For terminals of all sizes, LiSIM ROS offers a powerful pathway to improved safety, operational excellence, and long-term productivity.
