Scania Expands in Southern Africa with New Overhead Crane Order from RGM Cranes
Scania, a global leader in premium trucks, is strengthening its footprint in Southern Africa with a new facility in Aeroton. To support its growing production demands, Scania SA has placed an order with RGM Cranes for a range of state-of-the-art overhead cranes, set to be installed by mid-January 2025.
Meeting Rising Demand
Christian Håkansson, Head of Production at Scania SA, emphasized the need for expansion:
“We are doing exceptionally well in South Africa. Our production volume has increased significantly over the past 7-8 years, and we have outgrown our current plant. This new facility is necessary to meet the increasing demand.”
A Critical Partnership
Scania SA selected RGM Cranes for this crucial project due to their proven track record and expertise in the motor industry.
“We have an existing relationship with RGM Cranes—they have consistently supported us with servicing our cranes, load testing, and lifting tackle inspections. Their ability to deliver high-quality solutions within tight deadlines made them the ideal choice for this project.”
Håkansson noted that while Scania explored multiple suppliers, RGM Cranes’ superior technical expertise, stock availability, and structured operations made them the clear frontrunner.
Advanced Crane Technology for Precision Handling
The order includes a variety of cranes to accommodate Scania’s high-volume production needs, particularly for assembling bus and truck chassis. The equipment list features:
✅ Eight 125kg jib cranes with Planeta Pitch hoist units
✅ Four 1.2-ton single girder cranes
✅ One 1.6-ton single girder crane
✅ Two 3.2-ton single girder cranes
✅ Four 5-ton single girder cranes
All cranes will incorporate premium components from Planeta and Güralp, adhering to strict European quality standards that align with Scania’s operational requirements.
Real-Time Performance Monitoring
A standout feature of the new cranes is their Güralp hoist units, equipped with a crane monitoring system. This cutting-edge technology provides real-time performance feedback, ensuring optimal efficiency and safety.
Key features of the monitoring system include:
✔ Load tracking to prevent overloading
✔ Operational hours monitoring for scheduled maintenance
✔ Motion analysis to enhance workflow efficiency
Additionally, RGM Cranes will install a Dedicated Supply Line (DSL) system to power these cranes, seamlessly integrating them into Scania’s production process.
Enhancing Production Efficiency
These cranes will play a vital role in Scania’s operations by facilitating the assembly of trucks and buses, handling critical components such as engines, axles, and entire chassis.
With this major investment, Scania is poised to elevate its production capabilities, reinforcing its commitment to innovation and excellence in Southern Africa.
