Transglobal Cargo Becomes South Africa’s First Authorised Mobile Container Weighing Provider

Transglobal Cargo has become the first company in South Africa to receive authorisation from the South African Maritime Safety Authority (SAMSA) to verify the gross mass of packed containers using authorised mobile weighing equipment under the SOLAS Verified Gross Mass (VGM) Method 1 framework.

The approval marks a significant advancement for the country’s logistics sector by allowing certified container weighing services to be performed directly at customer locations, improving operational flexibility and supporting compliance with international shipping regulations.

With its SAMSA-approved mobile weighing unit, Transglobal Cargo can now verify container weights at customer premises or operational sites, eliminating the need for additional transport to fixed weighing facilities. The service is expected to reduce unnecessary container movements, shorten turnaround times, and improve overall supply chain efficiency.

Under the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) Convention, all packed export containers must have a verified gross mass before being loaded onto a vessel. Accurate weight verification is essential for maintaining vessel stability, ensuring cargo safety, and supporting efficient port operations.

SAMSA has authorised Transglobal Cargo to perform gross mass verification under SOLAS VGM Method 1, providing exporters, freight forwarders, and logistics operators with an approved solution for meeting international shipping requirements. The company has been issued Authorisation Number MWSA0001, which is valid until 8 June 2029.

The introduction of authorised mobile container weighing offers several operational benefits, including improved compliance management, faster cargo processing, reduced handling delays, and greater convenience for exporters. By bringing weighing services directly to customer sites, businesses can simplify logistics operations while ensuring full regulatory compliance.

The milestone also reflects Transglobal Cargo’s continued investment in specialised logistics solutions designed to improve safety, accuracy, and operational performance across the supply chain.

As global trade continues to demand higher standards of cargo compliance and efficiency, mobile weighing solutions are expected to play an increasingly important role in supporting modern container logistics. Transglobal Cargo’s latest authorisation positions the company at the forefront of this evolving service offering within South Africa’s logistics industry.
