Sandvik Rock Processing, in partnership with its Southern African distributor S&R Enterprises, has introduced its first dual-powered mobile machine in the region: the Sandvik QA452e triple-deck sizing screen featuring Doublescreen technology.
The QA452e was immediately deployed to a contractor working on a major dam project in Lesotho, producing high-quality G2 and G5 material on-site. The machine combines productivity with sustainability, offering a hybrid diesel-electric “e” drive option that addresses both operational efficiency and environmental performance.

Energy Efficiency and Cost Savings
PC Kruger, Business Line Manager for Crushing at Sandvik Rock Processing, emphasises that the launch reflects a growing regional demand for electric mobile crushing and screening solutions. “Customers in Southern Africa are increasingly seeking energy efficiency due to the financial benefits of reducing energy consumption, which is a major operational cost. Hybrid solutions provide significant fuel savings, versatile operation, and reduced carbon emissions,” he explains.
Diesel or Electric Flexibility
Stephen Smith, MD of S&R Enterprises, highlights that the QA452e can operate in diesel or electric mode, allowing operators to reduce running costs, lower onsite emissions, and decrease noise levels. Using external electric power also extends drivetrain service intervals and reduces maintenance requirements.
“The electric motor drive significantly cuts diesel engine servicing and hydraulic oil consumption, increasing machine availability. Over 10,000 hours, the machine uses up to 50% less hydraulic oil, and service intervals have doubled from 2,000 to 4,000 hours, subject to oil sampling,” Smith adds.
Doublescreen Technology for High Throughput
The QA452e features Sandvik’s patented Doublescreen technology, a revolutionary design with two independent high-velocity screen boxes. The primary screen acts as a fines extractor, while the secondary screen functions as a grader. This setup provides greater material control, adjustability, accuracy, and higher screening efficiency.
Each of the three decks measures 20’ x 5’ (6m x 1.5m), with a total screening area of 9m² per deck. The bottom deck is extended by 11% for additional fines extraction. Compared to conventional 20’ x 5’ screens, the Doublescreen design typically delivers up to 30% higher throughput and allows for 42 screen angle options, enabling precise grading without compromising productivity.
Extended Warranty and Reliability
Sandvik has increased the standard warranty from 12 months/1,000 hours to 24 months/3,000 hours, with optional extensions up to six years, providing operators with added confidence in the machine’s reliability.
With its combination of hybrid power, energy efficiency, and innovative Doublescreen technology, the QA452e positions itself as a market-leading solution for high-volume, high-specification material production in Southern Africa.
