Hybrid Straddle Carriers Drive Automation and Cleaner Port Operations

Straddle carriers remain an important part of container terminal operations, offering flexibility and speed for moving containers around busy yards. As terminals look to increase capacity while improving efficiency and reducing emissions, automation, electrification and hydrogen technologies are creating new opportunities for the equipment.

While some straddle carrier terminals are introducing yard gantry cranes as part of their capacity expansion strategies, other facilities continue to rely on straddle carriers because of their operational flexibility and ability to move containers efficiently across terminal yards.

Automation and Alternative Power

The development of automated straddle carrier technology is providing terminals with new ways to improve yard operations. Automation can support more consistent container movements while reducing the need for manual intervention in repetitive tasks.

Electrification is another area of development, with battery-powered equipment offering the potential to reduce emissions and fuel consumption compared with conventional diesel-powered machines.

Hydrogen is also being explored as an alternative power source for heavy-duty terminal equipment. CMB.TECH and Volvo Penta, for example, are continuing a hydrogen pilot involving straddle carrier technology at the Port of Antwerp.

These developments demonstrate how terminal operators and equipment manufacturers are evaluating different technologies to maintain the operational advantages of straddle carriers while addressing efficiency and environmental requirements.

As container terminals continue to balance capacity, productivity and sustainability, advances in automation and alternative power technologies are helping extend the role of straddle carriers in modern port operations.
