New terminal to be constructed at Pointe-Noire
Congo Terminal, a subsidiary of Africa Global Logistics (AGL), is making a substantial investment to build a new port terminal at Pointe-Noire.
An allocation of €400 million (around $447 million) has been set aside for this project, which will feature a 750-meter quay with a depth of 17 meters, a 26-hectare quayside, and 16 fully electric gantry cranes, including 4 ship-to-shore (STS) and 12 rubber-tired gantry (RTG) cranes. A major dredging campaign will also widen the channel to 300 meters at the bend and 250 meters in other sections. The terminal, known as ‘Môle Est,’ is already under construction and is expected to be operational by 2027.
“The construction of the East Mole is a collaborative project between the Port Autonome de Pointe-Noire (PAPN) and Congo Terminal to expand the nautical and operational capacities of the Pointe-Noire container terminal. This project anticipates the future needs of port users and shipping lines, allowing them to dock their largest vessels. Pointe-Noire is establishing itself as a prominent hub in global maritime logistics,” said Anthony Samzu, managing director of Congo Terminal.
This new infrastructure will enable Congo Terminal to handle larger vessels and boost its container handling capacity from 1 million to over 2.3 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) per year. The development is expected to generate over 900 new jobs, providing a significant economic and social boost for the region.
