Business Drydocks World Secures Agreement for the Largest Floating Sheerleg Crane in the Middle East and Africa, Enhancing Offshore Heavy Lift Capabilities
On September 10, Drydocks World entered into a contract with Shanghai Zhenhua Heavy Industries Co. Ltd. (ZPMC) to acquire a new-generation 5,000-tonne Floating Sheerleg Crane. This strategic move aims to address the increasing demand for large-scale offshore projects.
The signing ceremony took place in Dubai and was attended by notable figures including His Excellency Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, Group Chairman and CEO of DP World; Captain Rado Antolovic, PhD, CEO of Drydocks World; You Ruikai, Chairman of ZPMC; and senior management from both companies.
The design, construction, testing, and commissioning of the crane are expected to take about 24 months, with completion anticipated in the second quarter of 2026. Once operational, the crane will significantly enhance Drydocks World’s heavy-lifting capabilities, enabling the company to cater to the increasing demands of major projects, such as high-voltage offshore converter platforms and Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) vessel topsides. This investment will build on Drydocks World’s extensive experience, highlighted by successful projects including the conversion of the Tango FLNG and Excalibur FSU vessels, the refurbishment of the Firenze FPSO, and the ongoing EPC project for the UK Norfolk Vanguard Offshore Wind Platforms.
The new crane features a 160-meter-long A-frame capable of lifting heavy loads up to 5,000 tonnes to a height of 120 meters. It also includes a 600-tonne fly jib that extends its reach to 180 meters, facilitating the installation of larger vessel modules constructed on-site. The crane can accommodate up to 50 personnel offshore, reducing the need for additional support vessels. Its versatility makes it ideal for constructing offshore platforms, bridges, and various marine developments.
H.E. Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem remarked, “This significant investment represents a strategic milestone for Drydocks World and reflects our commitment to enhancing our services and achieving operational excellence globally. The crane will strengthen our leadership in the maritime industry and support projects that contribute to regional economic growth.”
Captain Rado Antolovic, PhD, stated, “Acquiring the largest crane of its kind in the Middle East and Africa is transformative for Drydocks World. As offshore vessels continue to grow larger, the demand for advanced lifting solutions with features like angled booms becomes crucial. This sheerleg crane, capable of handling heavier modules and expediting project timelines, allows us to undertake more extensive and complex projects, further establishing our position as a global leader in the maritime and offshore energy sectors. Partnering with ZPMC, a proven leader in high-capacity crane manufacturing, significantly enhances our lifting capabilities and ensures our success in mega-projects both regionally and internationally.”
You Ruikai, Chairman of ZPMC, added, “Our collaboration with Drydocks World builds on a history of successful projects with DP World and paves the way for future endeavors. We take pride in delivering a state-of-the-art crane that merges power with advanced technology for optimal efficiency and safety.”
Constructed from high-strength steel, the crane incorporates advanced safety features and an integrated control system for improved operational efficiency. Its automatic ballasting system ensures stability, and the inclusion of a high-capacity ballast water treatment plant underscores Drydocks World’s commitment to environmental sustainability.
