South Korea has officially commenced construction of the Gwangyang Port Automation Testbed, a major infrastructure initiative aimed at advancing smart port operations through artificial intelligence and automation technologies.
The KRW772.4 billion (approximately US$540 million) project will deliver a fully automated container terminal with an annual handling capacity of 1.36 million TEUs. Beyond expanding cargo handling capabilities, the facility will function as a real-world testing environment for next-generation port technologies designed to improve operational efficiency, safety, and productivity.
The automation testbed will support the development and validation of AI-driven systems, autonomous equipment, and intelligent logistics solutions that can enhance terminal performance while reducing operational costs. The project forms part of South Korea’s broader strategy to strengthen the competitiveness of its maritime logistics sector through digital innovation.
Once operational, the Gwangyang Port Automation Testbed is expected to accelerate the adoption of smart port technologies and provide valuable insights for future automated terminal developments, positioning the country at the forefront of modern port operations.
