Stockholm Central Station is set for a major redevelopment as rising passenger numbers and growing rail demand place increasing pressure on Sweden’s largest transportation hub.
Foster + Partners, working alongside Swedish architecture firm Marge Arkitekter, is developing plans to expand the area surrounding the station while improving passenger capacity and creating greener, more community-focused public spaces.
Opened in 1871, Stockholm Central Station currently handles around 230,000 people each day and approximately 200 million journeys annually. The station has increasingly outgrown its original infrastructure as rail travel continues to expand across Sweden.
According to Jernhusen, the state-owned company responsible for the station, the existing tracks and platforms are expected to reach capacity by 2030.
The station is particularly important to Sweden’s rail network, with around 80% of the country’s train journeys passing through Stockholm Central. The Swedish Transport Administration has also projected that passenger demand could increase by approximately 50% by 2045.
Focus on sustainable rail infrastructure
The redevelopment is designed to increase capacity while integrating sustainability into the future of the station and its surrounding urban environment.
Plans include greener public spaces and improved areas for pedestrians and the wider community, alongside infrastructure capable of accommodating increasing rail demand.
The project reflects the broader challenge facing major European rail hubs as cities seek to shift more passengers towards public transport while reducing the environmental impact of urban mobility.
Rail already has a relatively low emissions footprint compared with other forms of transport. According to the International Union of Railways, rail accounts for around 1% of transport emissions while carrying approximately 7% of global passengers.
However, the industry faces increasing pressure to further reduce emissions as governments and transport operators work towards long-term climate targets.
Preparing Stockholm for future rail demand
The redevelopment of Stockholm Central Station is therefore being positioned not only as a capacity expansion project but also as part of the city’s wider approach to sustainable urban development.
By combining additional passenger capacity with greener public spaces and improved infrastructure, the project aims to prepare one of Sweden’s most important transport hubs for future growth.
With existing infrastructure expected to face capacity constraints by 2030 and passenger demand forecast to continue rising through 2045, the redevelopment will play an important role in determining how Stockholm Central accommodates the next generation of rail travel.
