At a recent UD Trucks event at Zwartkops Raceway, Logistics News and other industry media were given an in-depth look at the brand’s strategy, product innovations, and customer-centric approach under the theme “Confident, Stable Growth through Volatility.”
Resilient Performance Across African Freight Markets
Despite rising fuel costs, input price volatility, and infrastructure pressures common across African transport networks, UD Trucks Southern Africa has maintained strong performance, reflecting its reliability in supporting long-term logistics operations.
The company achieved an overall new-vehicle market share of 8% in the region, including 10.8% in the heavy-duty segment, with aggregate industry sales rising to 31,652 units from 31,190 in 2024. Service Agreement uptake in the aftermarket reached ~50%, reinforcing fleet uptime and operational efficiency for cargo operators across the continent.
“Even in a challenging operating environment, our performance shows that customers trust UD Trucks to deliver reliable solutions that support their businesses,” said Filip Van den Heede, Managing Director, UD Trucks Southern Africa. “Our focus is clear: to drive further for better by offering innovative products, strong retail partnerships, and solutions that make a real difference for freight and cargo operators.”
Product Innovation in Real-World Conditions
Industry media experienced the UD Quon and UD Quester on the track, demonstrating performance under conditions similar to Africa’s demanding cargo routes.
The UD Quon, UD Trucks’ flagship long-haul vehicle, combines advanced technology, high productivity, and superior uptime, engineered to handle heavy-duty applications across long-distance freight corridors.
“The Quon represents the pinnacle of UD innovation—from safety and driver comfort to connectivity and performance. It’s built for operators who demand more from their vehicles,” said Van den Heede.
The UD Quester, a stalwart of UD Trucks’ portfolio in Africa, has earned a reputation for efficiency, durability, and versatility in long haul, general cargo, construction, and waste management applications. Every feature—from fuel efficiency to driver comfort and uptime—is informed by customer feedback, helping logistics operators reduce total cost of ownership while improving returns on fleet investments.
Uptime as a Strategic Advantage for Cargo Operators
For freight companies, unplanned downtime can significantly impact delivery schedules and profitability. UD Trucks Southern Africa’s proactive maintenance, predictive servicing, and rapid breakdown support help operators minimize disruptions and protect productivity.
“Uptime is about anticipation, not reaction,” said Sanjay Naipal, Aftermarket Director, UD Trucks Southern Africa. “Through connected services and strong dealer support, we help customers keep their fleets moving—even under Africa’s challenging operating conditions.”
People and Sustainability
UD Trucks Southern Africa emphasizes workforce development as part of its long-term sustainability strategy. Investment in driver training, cadet programs, and leadership initiatives ensures a pipeline of skilled professionals to support Africa’s growing cargo and logistics sector.
“Driving further for better goes beyond our vehicles,” Van den Heede concluded. “It reflects our purpose of creating value for people, communities, and the environment while supporting sustainable growth for African freight operations.”
